Miami-Dade County, Fla. – Newly released body camera footage shows the moments of a man shooting the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office outside an apartment building in the western Ridge area of the county on June 17.

According to MDSO, deputy Kelvin Cox shot and killed 24-year-old Kristofer Lazaro Lazaro Laboy outside a building inside the Sunset Palm Villa Association complex, located on Northwest 85th Street Road and Fourth Court in Miami’s city limits.

Report at 5 pm:

Body Cam Video Shows Deputy Shooting Armed Staff

According to the agency, the shooting happened after representatives of details of MDSO’s robbery intervention, attempting to bring the yellow Chevrolet Corvette in a dark tone.

The driver did not stop and authorities were able to track the sports car to the complex, deputies said.

Authorities say driver Laboy left, armed, and Cox shot and killed him at about 5:15 p.m.

The video released by MDSO shows Cox shouting loudly: “Put down the gun!” Later, “Oh, S —!” When he saw Laboy holding the gun, it caused Cox to open fire.

In the video, Cox picks up Laboy's gun from the ground and removes it after shooting.

Video produced by MDSO states that the officers’ emergency lights are activated. They said they found marijuana and prescription drugs in Laboy's cars.

Laboy's family members have been asking MDSO to release videos of the shooting.

“He is not a damn thug,” one family member said after the shooting. “He is a loving son, brother and nephew.”

After the shooting, Laboy's father said his son called him in advance and said, “Dad, I need help, come and help me, pick me up, I'm being chased, I don't know who.”

“He is a hidden carrier,” Laboy's father said. “He has a gun for protection.”

The shooting is still under investigation. Cox, a 23-year veteran of the unit, has been involved in two other fatal shootings, both of which have been ruled reasonable.

“While the thorough investigation by Florida law enforcement is still ongoing, the video has been released, ensuring a range of events that everyone sees as they unfold,” Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said in a statement released on the tape. “My commitment is clear regardless of the outcome, keeping transparent with our community, maintaining the highest standards, and continuing to work every day to win and maintain your trust.”

Lawyers representing the Laboy family issued a statement Monday criticizing MDSO:

“The question of the release of the video by the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office raises more questions than the answers. The video shows no lights and sirens to chase Christopher, causing him to worry about his life. MDSO released this massively edited video, portraying the video as criminals who are legally owned by guns.

“The officer (who) killed Christopher is shown in the video to drive the car with one hand and the other with the gun – the agent is obviously about to release the gun that day. The deputies wait until Kristofer is in trouble, has nowhere to go, fearing his own life, and in these cases they are unwilling to get into trouble in their emergency situations. If the MDSO really believes in transparency, they should release the entire body camera footage, including the initial encounter with Christofer.

“Released all unedited body camera footage now.”
