USDA to invest $152 million in rural Iowa communities

  • by admin

Twelve rural communities in rural Iowa are expected to benefit from USDA’s $152 million investments that will be used to improve infrastructure, among other projects. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins made the announcement Saturday at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. It took place during the Governor’s charity rendition show. “Whether it’s better hospitals in rural America, better health care in rural America, better health care in rural America, better service in rural America — this president, perhaps more than anyone in our lifetime, not just the first president of farmers. He is also the president of rural America,” said Rollins. According to the press release, the money will be used for 19 rural development projects in communities across the state. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said the projects are expected to develop not only rural infrastructure, but will also boost the state's economy and encourage private investment. The money will be distributed among projects in 20 Iowa counties. The project includes a $37 million loan to Guthrie County Hospital to expand and renovate its facilities. According to USDA's approach, renovations will include additions to behavioral health care rooms and updates to technology and equipment. The projects will also involve funding for water and wastewater projects in 13 cities, grants for transportation and street improvements, and loans for rural business and job growth. “I want to thank you and President Trump for putting our farmers first and investing $152 million to grow rural communities in Iowa. During this time of uncertainty in the AG economy, I am very grateful for having a partner we can rely on,” said Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds. “Today’s announcement is good news for all the communities that receive these grants. I look forward to these efforts to make our rural communities stronger and more prosperous than ever.” Another announcement Saturday was the nomination for Iowan Glen R. Smith, Iowa, the next secretary for rural development for the USDA. Smith of the Atlantic Ocean is involved in agriculture and agribusiness. Iowa State University alumni recently served on the board of directors of farm credit management in Washington, D.C.
