New York Yankees infielder Anthony Volpe will attract the biggest attention of fans and media. With such a large microscope, it is easy to forget that he is not the only infield member. Ryan McMahon never achieved his potential in the Colorado Mountains landing in Colorado Rockies, but with a lot of primitive talents, he showed a level of inconsistency with the one he had always had.
A New York Post American League scout mentioned that despite high hopes, he was upset with McMahon:
“Week one was what I expected. But I think he will be able to be consistent in such a strong roster.”

McMahon's struggles continue to fight the Boston Red Sox this weekend. He isn't the only member of the Yankees, but his lack of contribution may be noticed when the series' autopsy is completed. McMahon played three of four games this weekend, and in 10 he didn't score a single hit. He hit five times, and the only time he reached the base was when he was hit by the court.
McMahon's best contact was a 103.7 mph hard-hitting ground ball, finding the gloves of the latest Red Sox first baseman Nathaniel Lowe. Apart from that, he has two weak ground balls, both of which are delivered to the infielder's gloves at 68 mph. This raw force is dormant in the series against Boston, which is probably his worst in the pinstripes to date.
The most unfortunate thing about McMahon’s slideshow is that he did get a hit start. In his first two series against the Phillies and the Rays, he reached .400/.520/.500 with 196 WRC+. He made 8 hits and 4 walks in 25 set appearances. Although he didn't have a home run, he did have two doubles.
However, this is McMahon’s best. Now, as Yankee, he hit .211/.322/.303. He has 83 WRC+, has added two more doubles since his first start and has a home run.
McMahon was asked about his struggles this weekend and was candid with them.
“I'm just struggling and feeling bad on the plate. I'm going to play. As long as we win, I don't really care about my job.”
One of McMahon's save graces is the elite's third base defense. He was in multiple doubles matches in Game 4 against the Red Sox. His five above-average outs this season are the type of excellent gloves the Yankees have never done at some point. Maybe it's not better than Donaldson since Josh Donaldson, and that's not a very high barrier.
