The Detroit Tigers acquired right-handed reliefist Rafael Montero from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for minor league infielder Jim Jarvis.
Montero, 34, has won 360 professional regular season appearances in his 11th year of his major (2014-17), Rangers (2019-20) (2019-20), Mariners (2021), Astros (2021-25) (2021-25) and Braves (2025). He also played 15 playoffs, releasing 2.51 ERAs for the 2022 Astros and 2023 Astros in 14 1/3 innings.
Montero combined this season between the Astronauts and the Braves, 0-1 with 5.40 ERA in 39 relief appearances and with 39 strikeouts. He keeps opposing batsmen at the .211 average and .657 OPS.
Montero started the season with the Astros, making three appearances before being traded to Atlanta on April 8. In the Braves' game, Montero won 13 games from June 8 to July 19, with his ERA on 1.93 ERA (3 runs in 14 innings).
Jarvis, 24, was the Tigers' 11th round pick at the 2023 draft at the University of Alabama. He has been playing second base, third base and shortstop at Double-A Erie in 77 games this season, where he hits with 242 home runs and 29 RBIs. At the time of trading, he was not listed as the 30 Tiger prospect by MLB Pipeline.
