US Open: Gauff passes through Tomljanovic in the first round
In the tough US opening match, family favorite Coco Gauff overcomes hard work to beat Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 7-5.

The 21-year-old from Delray Beach got off the bike with her right foot, even though she had to work hard to get a first-round victory. Goff beat Alja Tomljanovic in the nearly 3-hour marathon, but beat 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5.
A few days before the season’s final Grand Slam started, the world’s third-ranked player changed her coach. Her new serve wasn't perfect – she got four Aacs but also recorded 10 double failures – she encountered 59 unmandatory mistakes, which resulted in her losing four of her four games in nine games since winning the French Open in June.

But Goff was enough to survive the tough opening test, and she had another one in today’s second round. If she had played against Naomi Osaka in the fourth round, or rose up in the fourth round.

When will Coco Gauff's next game be at the U.S. Open?
The second round of the 2025 U.S. Open will be held on Thursday, August 28. The start time is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on ESPN2.
If Goff wins, she will face the 28th seed Magdalena Frech or Peyton Stearns in the third round on Saturday, August 30 on ESPN2.

Coco Gauff plays Donna Vekic, the 49th player in the WTA rankings. The 29-year-old from Croatia defeated Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round with a three-set marathon (3-6, 7-5, 6-3). Her career ranking is No. 17.
Vekic's best result in the Grand Slam event was at Wimbledon's 2024 semi-finals. She reached the quarter-finals at the 2019 U.S. Open. Gauff and Vekic won two wins in January at the United Cup, while Vekic ranked No. 1 in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
