South Korea is one of the most powerful allies in Asia, and it was a tough start at President Donald Trump, struggling with tariffs because it took months without a permanent leader. But its new president, Lee Jae-Myung, held a $150 billion dedication with Trump on Monday, whose name will surely attract U.S. leaders: “Let America create shipbuilding again.”

What South Korean officials also call MASGA packages include the construction of new U.S. shipyards, training for shipbuilders and maintenance of U.S. Navy ships. This is a key part of the last-minute trade deal South Korea held with Trump last month, who said he wanted to revitalize U.S. shipbuilding for economic and national security reasons.
The White House summit is a significant opportunity for Lee to advocate for South Korea's interests in Trump after months of political turmoil caused by former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
Although Lee comes from a Liberal Party, he and Trump share a lot in common – both are the subjects of assassination attempts, and both are more willing to diplomat with nuclear-armed North Korea than their predecessors. However, their views on politics, economy and foreign policy are very different, which may make the summit challenging.

National Guard in Washington, D.C. begins carrying guns
Forces were deployed to Washington to support Trump's efforts to mitigate crimes and began carrying guns Sunday night, a person familiar with the Defense Department said.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized the change last week. The official said most guards will carry M17 pistols, weapons issued by their service, while a few units will be equipped with their service M4 rifles.
According to the Federal Task Force that manages the operation, the troops have the right to use their weapons to protect themselves and regard “imminent threat” as the “last resort.”
Several armed forces were seen patrolling near Chinatown on Sunday night, wearing patches marked “MP” to show their role as military police. The task force said “pre-designated subway locations” with the start of the school year will be added in “pre-designated subway locations.”
A White House official told NBC News that the National Guard has not arrested despite the weapons. There are currently more than 2,000 soldiers in the U.S. capital and have been assisting law enforcement with community safety patrols, traffic control points and mobility support for crowds.
