Primary a ground ball pitcher, Ferguson has put up a 3.55 ERA in 212 appearances with the Dodgers, Astros, Yankees and Pirates since returning from a second Tommy John surgery in 2022. The Mariners will pay him the pro-rated portion of his $3 million salary for 2025, then slot him into the back end of a bullpen featuring Matt Brash and Andres Munoz.
“We are delighted to join Caleb and strengthen our bullpen,” Justin Hollander, executive vice president and general manager of Marinas, said in a statement. “He has been one of the most reliable left-handed relief workers in the game and added a playoff experience to our group.”
The Astros, who chased the Astros in the American League West, had traded at first baseman Josh Naylor and was still looking to add another late substitute and third baseman.
Martinez was originally signed in Mexico and was 6-foot-4, with 6.18 ERA in 16 games in the Class A branch over 16 seasons.
The Mariners also appointed right-hander Collin Snider to recover from his mission on the 15-day injury roster.
