Denis Villeneuve's “Dune: Part III” is clearly being filmed, which includes the 15mm 65mm (IMAX) and 5 perf 65mm formats, and Denis Villeneuve's “Dune: Part III” move quietly flying.
The Revelation comes from Kodak, who recently revealed the news. There is no doubt that the film's DP, the film's main advocate Linus Sandgren, may be a bit swinging here.
This marks a significant deviation from the first two “dunes” periods, both of which were digitally shot. Despite the epic visual range and meticulous design, these films are still a lot of products in the digital age. With the “part 3,” Villeneuve seems to be doubling up the more organic aesthetics to end his sci-fi trilogy.
This also positions “Dune: Part III” as part of the big budget work that returns to the film. Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino and Greta Gerwig have all been in the 65mm format in recent years, often dazzling at the box office and awards seasons.
Greig Fraser, the photographer of Villeneuve's first two “Dune” movies, did not return to the third part. Fraser's replacement would be Oscar-winning Sandgren, whose work is most striking, can be seen in “La La Land” and “No Time to Die.” Recently, he took Noah Baumbach's “Jay Kelly” to the camera, which will be released later this fall.
Sandgren is well known for his preference for filming in films, especially in the 35mm and 65mm formats, and he is very vocal about it. Sandgren once said that movies offer a kind of “magic and emotion” that numbers cannot be copied.
The main photography of “Dune: Part III” begins in Budapest in July 2025. The film is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026.
