Today marks the 80th anniversary of the first use of nuclear weapons in the war.

During World War II, U.S. President Harry Truman ordered the detonation of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, three days later, in Nagasaki.

The result is that deaths range from 150,000 to 246,000, mainly civilians. The Japanese surrendered to the Allies six days after the rear bomb, the last time they used nuclear weapons in the conflict.

The atomic bomb was produced secretly in the Manhattan project, directed by nuclear physicist J Robert Oppenheimer.

Sir Christopher Nolan adapted his life into three hours of epic oppenheimer, a character starring Cillian Murphy.

Called a “masterpiece” by Telegraph, Oppenheimer went on to receive 13 Oscar nominations and won seven, including Murphy's Best Actor and Robert Downey Jr.

Oppenheimer is now streaming on Netflix in 4K.
