The NFLPA finally selected a temporary replacement for Lloyd Howell.

The union announced late Sunday that it had elected David White as the new interim executive director. White will replace Howell, who resigned last month in a scandal that shocked the league.

White was elected Howell for the first time in 2023. He is a former national executive director and chief negotiator for the Film Actors Association. He is also the CEO of 3CG and is the chairman of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco.

“I thank the NFLPA’s player leadership for entrusting my privileges and responsibilities to guide them as interim executive directors,” White said in a statement. “This is a responsibility I do not take easily and I am committed to rebuilding trust and ensuring that the union serves the best service to its members.

“I look forward to working with the entire NFLPA team to ensure the health and safety of players, ensure their financial situation, and further strengthen their voices to shape their future.”

David White takes over after a bad NFLPA month

White will take over the NFLPA after multiple offseason scandals shocked the organization.

It began last month’s report by Pablo Torre and Mike Florio, detailing how the NFL and NFLPA have masked a collusion complaint ruling. This reportedly suggests that the arbitrators concluded that the league encouraged its team to reduce margin when Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson joined the franchise. The NFL won the complaint because it has not been proven that the team has taken the advice, but “no doubt” encouraged them to do so.

Then, after Howell resigned, he reportedly paid more than $3,000 at the strip club a day later. He also resigned from his consulting position at Carlyle Group due to a clear conflict of interest after the investment firm wanted a handful of NFL ownership.

After the review, Browns Center and union president JC Tretter also resigned as chief strategy officer of the union. Apparently, he left his interim executive director position after he participated in the two-person competition. NFLPA CEO Don Davis was another one at the time.

Tretter played a central role in Howell's hiring, which is widely considered suspicious. As a Carlyle Group consultant, he encountered a conflict of interest, and players may not know about him in a sexual discrimination lawsuit by his former employer. The NFL and NFLPA mask another kind of dissatisfaction with Tretter. Tretter even compared himself to the “Game of Thrones” character while defending his decision.
