Iowa Democrats start canvassing votes ahead of upcoming elections

  • by admin

Sioux City (KTIV) – Two Iowa Democrats in Sioux City, ahead of the upcoming special elections on August 26. This is to replace the late Rocky de Witt in the Iowa Senate.

Democratic candidate Catelin Drey began her canvassing journey in Woodbury County on Saturday, the 26th.

If elected, Dray would be one of 17 Democrats in the Iowa Senate, which would undermine the Republican super-difference. She said it would allow Senate Democrats to be in talks more.

“It does mean we will support things like local control. Sioux City's budget has indeed been significantly lower, because the laws have been passed in the last few meetings, which has hurt the Sioux people,” Drey said. “So it will be very important to be able to negotiate and say, 'We can do better for people in our area,'”

Join Drey is a Democratic candidate for Iowa Secretary of State Ryan Peterman. He came to express his support for Dray, helping her crash into the Woodbury County gate before the Seo City Hall meeting.

Peterman, a naval veteran from Betendorf, Iowa, announced his campaign in May. Peterman said he plans to address election security, voting access and restore trust in the election if elected.

“We have seen a lot of comments in elections and voting over the past few years, and unfortunately, a lot of them have been used as a threatening tactic that can prove that, like the laws we see in Iowa, makes it harder for people to vote,” Peterman said. “So security is absolutely crucial, but so is accessibility, and perhaps most important is just the ability or need to restore trust in the election. We have a fair system and we need to make sure it remains fair, which means it will be safe and accessible.”

Peterman will compete with the current Paul Pat, who is currently the 32nd Secretary of Iowa since 2015. Since Michael Mauro in 2006, no Democrats have been elected as Iowa Secretary of State for nearly 20 years.
