Members of the Horry County School Board convened Monday to discuss the program “With Reading” program designed to improve students’ literacy.

The initiative aims to get 95% of students to read or above their grade by 2030.

Currently, the district reports that about 75% of students meet this benchmark.

They talked about some ideas about how to help parents and students.

Lisa Bourcier, communications director at Horry County School District, stressed the importance of parental involvement. “A lot of parents want to go home and provide some other guidance or resources for their students, but they don’t know what is being taught in the classroom,” she said. “It’s very helpful to be able to provide parents with additional parental resources to provide some extra support for our students.”

During the course meeting, the board discussed accessing designated areas for parents to tailor-made reports to their children’s personal needs.

This will provide parents with more opportunities to understand and assist the lessons their children are studying.

In addition, there is discussion on the implementation of these resources in collaboration with the Horry County Library.

The initiative is spearheaded by the region’s new principal, Clifford Jones.
