Hanalei (Hawaiinewsnow) – Flash flood warnings on North Kauai have been cancelled after heavy rains this morning caused floods to close the Hanalei Bridge.

Kauai Emergency Management Agency reported that the Cucio Expressway is still flooded. The Hanalei Bridge remained closed as of 11 a.m. Sunday.

Floods are caused by earlier heavy rains. The rainfall rate has decreased, but the water level is still rising.

USGS data shows that the Hanalei River water level was as high as 7.27 feet at 6:20 a.m., well above the 5-foot flooding phase.

During the 24-hour period ending at 7 a.m., Waialeale Mountain recorded 8 inches of rain while Hanalei received 4.08 inches.

At the same time, the North Wailea Ditch dropped 4.45 inches, and the USGS gauge at Waiahi Stream on the southeast slope of Waialeale, recording 4.79 inches.
