Some passengers on Emirates EK086 flights travelling in Dubai had a challenging night at Zurich Airport, which was delayed overnight on July 19 due to technical issues.
Of the 300 travelers, some have hotel accommodation, while others, especially those with a single visa application, cannot leave the airport terminal. As most airport facilities and restaurants are closed at 11 p.m., these 20+ passengers find themselves effectively stuck with food, proper rest facilities or clear information.
Dubai-based Iranian expat Negin Jafari ended up with her friend Sanaz after spending more than 20 hours at Zurich airport. “We checked early from the hotel and arrived at the airport at 5 pm. Our flight was scheduled to be 10.15pm and Emirates staff asked us to wait for the delay when passengers started queuing at the door.” Khaleej Times.

“At around 11pm, the airport lights started to turn off and everyone was confused. At that time, staff told us that the flight had been cancelled and text messages were received from Emirates.
“Some of us actually have nowhere to go because of our entry permits; others have been given hotel accommodation, and they can leave the airport,” Nikin said. “Emerald staff tried to help, but the accommodation inside the airport was full. At about 2 a.m., we finally gave us a temporary bed in the corridor, but by 7 a.m., we were awake so they could clear the space.”
Nikin claimed that the facility manager quickly asked them to evacuate the area in order to make room for guests. Seating in the waiting area was limited, some sat for hours.
Although passengers had hoped to be able to enter the UAE lounge, they were only allowed to be fresh for a short time. “We are not allowed inside because the lounge is not open until 11:30 a.m.,” Nikin said.
Some passengers were rebooked by plane at 3.30 pm on July 20, while others had to wait until 8 pm to leave.
“My back is painful and I can't sit all the time. But, fortunately, we took it home safely,” said Nikin, who has lived in the UAE for 23 years. “If this happens at Dubai Airport, passengers won’t have to go through all of this.”
In a statement Khaleej TimesA UAE spokesman confirmed the delay. “Due to technical issues, Emirates EK086 experienced an overnight delay on July 19. The affected passengers were given food and refreshments and provided hotel accommodation where possible.
“Unfortunately, some passengers are unable to leave the airport; however, we work closely with the airport authorities to ensure they get the best support in this situation.”
The airline added that the flight was rescheduled to local time on July 20.
The spokesperson added: “Emerald sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused to you. The safety of our passengers and crew is crucial.”
