SC Charleston (WCSC) – Lowcountry medical officials warned that the sharp increase in Covid-19 cases was due in part to the new variant known as “Razor Blade Covid” because it has signature symptoms, which is an extremely painful sore throat.
Dr. Jon Carter of Roper Express Care said his office has seen positive tests this month with mergers in May, June and July.
“This particular stress leads to a sore throat that people describe as a razor,” Carter said. “We often find positive interconnects instead of strep. This is in line with other flu-like symptoms that suggest it is not strep.”
The variant is part of the Omicron family and has been tracked nationwide for months, but is now climbing in South Carolina, doctors say. Carter added that many patients were surprised when their tests were positive.
He encourages anyone who experiences a sudden sore throat, especially when paired with flu-like symptoms, to take home exams. If negative, he advises a doctor to check to rule out other diseases such as streptococci or mono.
With the school re-meeting, Carter said it was normal for more disease to spread in August, but the same coalition preventive measures remained applicable:
- If you're sick
- If you are recovering, wear a mask
- Coughing to your elbow
The CDC continues to recommend staying up to date with Covid boosters.
“Kuved may never go away,” Carter said. “But we know how to manage it, and people should know when to do the test and when to ask for help.”
