Four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome was airlifted to the hospital after suffering multiple injuries in a crash in southern France.
The 40-year-old British man was taken to the hospital by a helicopter on Wednesday afternoon after a crash near Toulon about 105 miles (170 kilometers) from his Monaco home.
Froome's team described the crash as “severe”, but said he was in a stable condition and had no head injuries.
However, the scan revealed that Froome had a broken rib, collapsed lungs and fractured lumbar vertebrae.
French newspaper L'Equipe reported that Froome arrived consciously and was able to talk to medical staff.
He will have surgery on his back on Thursday.
Froome won the first of his four Tour de France titles in 2013, winning the race for three consecutive years between 2015 and 2017.
Israel – Premir's technical rider has no contract at the end of the year and is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to injury.
