Junior Victoria Mboko caused a shock when she defeated top-seeded Coco Gauff to reach the quarterfinals of the Montreal Canadian Open.
The 18-year-old Canadian was entered into a major draw by a wildcard, which only took 62 minutes to beat the two Grand Slam champions 6-1 6-4 and continued her displacement to improve her ranking.
Mboko's four of four of the five breakout points against Gauff are now missing a set in just four games.
“I'm locked in the game,” Mboko said.
“I tried to stay as calm as possible, especially playing in front of so many people. It was a very special experience for me.”
She began the year in the world's 333rd and continued to play 22 consecutive games without the 5 championships on the second ITF Tour.
Mboko entered the 85th place in the match, but a victory over Gauff would lift her to 53rd place, and in the quarterfinals she would face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, just two higher.
Goff once again struggled in the serve, committing six double breaks, bringing her game total to 43 of three games.
“I think she will have a lot of success on the tour. I'm sure we'll have more fights in the future,” Goff said.
Meanwhile, the second seed Iga Swiatek sailed into the final 16 games with a 6-2 win over Eva Lys 6-2.
In Toronto, Casper Ruud beat Karen Khachanov 6-4 7-5 and reached the quarter-finals within walking distance of the highest seed Alexander Zverev defeated Francisco Cerundolo with Pacers.
The fifth seed, Holger, ran an early lead and lost to Australia's Alexei Popyrin 6-4 2-6 3-6.
