Bold rush: The New York Post expands to the California Post in Los Angeles

The New York Post is heading west.

The tabloid’s ownership announced that it will launch its sister publication The California Post in early 2026.

The new tabloid, located in Los Angeles, will operate separately under the leadership of the New York Post Media Group, a subsidiary of News Corp., which owns the New York Post, Page Six and Deciders.

The new paper will give readers the same flavor as the post expects of fiery, gossip writing, and until now it was the focus of California. The West Coast version of the post will include local and entertainment news, sports reports and of course its own pun cover. The publication will include a daily printed version in particular.

“This is the next performance of our national brand,” Keith Poole, editor-in-chief of the New York Post, said in a statement. “California is the most populous state in the country, and is the center of entertainment, AI revolution and advanced manufacturing, not to mention a sports powerhouse.”

“With the California Post, we will bring a common sense, problem-based approach to metropolitan journalism,” Poole added.

The paper will be hosted by Nick Papps, editor-in-chief of News Corp alum, who will report it to Poole. The announcement said that as a member of the Postal Media Group, the California Post will have access to its parents’ journalism enrollment capabilities and share resources with the New York Post.

“There is no doubt that the position will play a key role in attracting and inspiring readers who starve to death the wit of earnest reporting and hockey,” News Corp CEO Robert Thomson said in a statement.

Gambit offers a major opportunity for Post Media Group, as Los Angeles is home to the second largest digital reader concentration, with approximately 3.5 million only visitors a month and 7.3 million statewide. According to the statement in this article, approximately 90% of digital readers of the position currently live outside the New York media market.

The announcement also hopes to take advantage of California’s poor news media landscape. As California newspapers face the same decline in rising advertising revenue and production costs nationwide, some stores have largely trimmed their newsrooms or closed their doors altogether. Since 2005, the state has lost one-third of newspapers since 2005, according to the 2023 local news report from the Northwest Medier Journalism Institute.

By expanding into Hollywood's backyard, the California Post may also try to challenge gossip domination of Los Angeles trade publications such as variety shows, Hollywood Reporter and deadlines.
