Knowledge about Labor Day and its history

Labor Day is more than just barbecue, shopping and sales and a long weekend. This is what federal holidays know about it.

As summer vacation is almost over and September is approaching, which means everyone is going to school or working. So, when is the next holiday?

From New Year's Day in January to Christmas in December, the federal government, banking institutions, the U.S. Postal Service, most schools and many private businesses officially observed 11 federal holidays.

In late August, we already have six federal holidays in 2025, including New Year's Day (January 1), Martin Luther King Jr. So what are left?

Here is a list of the remaining federal holidays and their dates for 2025.

What is a federal holiday?

Federal holidays are scheduled (and paid) days off for non-essential employees of the U.S. federal government. Schools, banks, financial markets, major grocery chains and retailers also usually observe federal holidays.

Federal holidays, also known as public holidays, are designated by Congress and recognized by the government.

Federal employees usually receive 11 public holidays per calendar year, plus the additional days of the new president’s inauguration.

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, only five federal holidays are retained in 2025. See the dates left below:

  • Labor Day: Monday, September 1
  • Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples Day): Monday, October 13
  • Veterans Day: Tuesday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day: Thursday, November 27
  • Christmas: Thursday, December 25

How to turn a federal holiday into a longer holiday

Creating an extended break in the rest of 2025 is simple; all you have to do is cleverly combine federal leave with a few days of paid leave (PTO) or any other “free” dates stored in Melanie Fish, head of public relations at Expedia Group Brands, previously told the U.S.

If you are willing to plan, you can do it for 20 consecutive days during Labor Day and Christmas.

This is the way to do it.

Labor Day (Monday, September 1):

  • Requires PTO on Friday, August 29
  • Continuous rest days: 4 days (August 29 to September 1)

On Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples Day)) (Monday, October 13):

  • Requires PTO on Friday, October 10
  • Continuous rest days: 4 days (October 10th to 13th)

For Veterans Day (Tuesday, November 11):

  • Requires PTO Monday, November 10
  • Continuous vacation: 4 days (November 8 to 11)

Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 27)

  • Please PTO on Monday, November 24; Tuesday, November 25, November 26 (Wednesday) and Friday, November 28 (unless you are already on vacation)
  • Continuous rest days: 9 days (November 22 to 30)

Christmas (Thursday, December 25):

  • Request a PTO on Monday, December 22; Tuesday, December 23; Wednesday, December 24 (unless you enjoy Christmas Eve) and Friday, December 26
  • Continuous rest days: 9 days (December 20-28)
