James Gunn will write and direct “The Next Part of the Super Family,” Warner Bros. discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed on the company’s revenue call.
Gunn had previously said in various interviews at his Superman press conference that he was writing a new movie that included David Corenswet's Superman, though he was always about this being an independent Superman sequel or something else. Zaslav has no clarity there, choosing “The Next Movie in Super Family”, but this is Gunn will direct the movie in addition to writing the script. He plays the same dual role in Superman.
Warner Bros. recently rebooted the DC Universe with Gunn's “Superman” which had $125 million written off at home in early July and has since generated $315 million in North America and $550 million worldwide.
The next in the series is Peacemaker Season 2, followed by the 2026 “Super Girl” movie and “Lantern” TV series. In addition, there is “Clayface”, which will be filmed this year. Gunn recently told CBS Mornings that fans should expect each entry to have its own flavor and tone, just like the actual comics.
“'clayface' is a completely different thing. Even though it's in the same universe, it's a complete horror movie, and it's one of the things we want to do,” Gunn said. “There is no corporate style. It's not every movie that's going to be like 'Superman'. Artists, directors and writers who create everyone bring their own meaning…we don't want people to be bored.”
James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired in 2022 to reset the status of DC Studios, which has long struggled to keep up with Disney's successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. David Corenswet portrays Superman, Gunn and Safran in this world outline an ambitious 10-year sequel and spin-off project. Their efforts will continue in two blockbusters in 2026, “Super Girl” and “Clay Side”, as well as new perspectives on “Wonder Woman”.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav praised Gunn and Safran teams for calling new life and excitement to one of the world's most iconic storytelling franchises.” Although “Superman” has always been a start, DC still faces challenges as “Supergirl” and “Clayface” are led by relatively unknown protagonists. Compared to Superman, Superman is one of the most well-known heroes on Earth. As Disney starts learning the tough way through MCU’s unbalanced box office streak, not all heroes get the same receipt on the big screen.
It was all his for Zaslav, who loudly congratulated Iron Man on drawing a new path. “DC’s vision is clear and the momentum is real,” he said after landing in Superman in the theater. “I’m excited about what’s going on.”
