President Donald Trump said tariffs will not lead to higher prices. But the U.S. economy seems to disagree: inflation remains fairly moderate due to tariffs.
The latest round of import taxes that Trump came into effect on Thursday will immediately make imports from affected countries more expensive in the United States.
New tariffs could raise prices:
electronic: Computers were one of the main imports last year, mainly from high-end countries including China, Mexico, Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia.
clothing: The United States bought most of the clothing from other countries. Top destinations include China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India and Indonesia.
watch: Watches are one of Switzerland’s highest exports to the United States, with tariffs now at 39%.
shoe: China, Vietnam and Indonesia are the main destinations for making shoes, with tariffs in the three countries next week at least 19%.
Alcohol: On Thursday, tariffs on goods from major alcoholic beverage suppliers, including wine, whiskey and vodka, rose to 15%.
furniture: Vietnam is the main source of imported furniture, followed by China.
Toy: Made mainly in China and Vietnam. Toy brands warn of higher prices.
