The White House announced on Wednesday that it would impose a 25% tariff on India, which raised the total tax on major U.S. trading partners to 50%.
“I find that the Indian government is currently importing Russian Federation oil directly or indirectly,” President Donald Trump said in an executive order.
“The Indian clauses for importing to U.S. Customs territory shall therefore be subject to an additional 25% value tax rate, consistent with applicable law,” the executive order reads.
Under the order, the new tariff will take effect within 21 days.
Trump's new tariff rate on India has now become one of the highest taxes for all U.S. trading partners. This is the latest sign that Trump is working to punish countries that buy Russian oil, as he has increased his comments on Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine in recent weeks.

Trump said last week that India will pay a 25% tariff in addition to a “fine” for the country's purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia. It is unclear what such a fine might look like at the time.
Trump said on Tuesday that he would raise tariffs in India over the next 24 hours as they are buying Russian oil and they are cheering for the war machine. ”
“If they were to do that, I wouldn't be happy,” Trump said on CNBC's “Squawk Box.”
