When the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers kicked off Monday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, there were two playoff results in the U.S. League kicking off three-game series.
The Yankees (60-52) are rolling up after a sudden Hot Marlins swept through three series. Since June 13, New York has been 18-27 in its last 45 games. For much of the first three months of the season, the Bronx Bombers are now third in Al East, behind the No. 2 leading Blue Jays.
Meanwhile, the Rangers (58-55) have lost five of their last seven games, ranking third in Al West, behind the first Astros’ 4½ games. Texas returned to Arlington after losing three of its four games against division rival Seattle.
If the season ends today, New York will win the second wildcard for AL. However, Texas' third and final wildcard berth was followed by two games with the Mariners.
Monday's pitching showdown had two left-handeds: Yankees All-Star Max Fried (12-4, 2.62 ERA) and Rangers veteran Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.78). Fried hopes to be the first 13-game champion in the Grand Slam. In his final game, he gave up just two runs in the 6-inch game to beat the Rays 7-5. The victory ended his two consecutive victories and exploded. Meanwhile, Corbin has been working for the last month. He has 2-0 at 2.30 ERA in his last five games. He has not lost his decision since June 23.
According to the latest Major League Baseball (MLB) odds, New York was Monday's -141 currency hotline favorite, while Texas losers were +119 underdogs. While Yankees Cavalry Game is a big attraction for Monday’s sports landscape, there are other options in 16 games of MLB Slate.
