Lower Manhattan (WABC) – The other person was detained by Ice just minutes after the routine visa hearing. On Saturday, the detention sparked more protests.
Flowers adorn the fence outside the Federal Square Immigration Court when religious and city leaders came out to support loved ones and supporters of those detained by hockey agents.
One of the latest detainees – 20-year-old Yeonsoo Go, the daughter of beloved bishop pastor Kyrie Kim, and graduated from Scarsdale High School in Westchester County. The Korean moved to New York with his mother in 2021.
Attorneys close to the case said the GO has filed an application to extend her current visa, which is scheduled to expire in December.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, claimed “the visa was extended more than two years ago” and said: “Bing arrested her on July 31 and placed her in the rapid dismissal process.”
GO's lawyers said GO was ordered to appear in court on Thursday to hold a procedural hearing on its visa application application. The judge sent the date to return to court in October, but as she left the building, Icefield agents were waiting to arrest her.
“She is with her mother. She is heartbroken. When she was late at night, later that day, she broke down,” said Go's boyfriend, Leo Chu.
Before the hearing, I went to talk to her boyfriend and friends.
Her friend Gabriella Lopez added: “She was a little nervous… Given the climate… her fear has come true now.”
“Her mother gets calls from Yeonsoo regularly, she lives in 26 Federal Plaza, and we know that, in fact, it's not actually a facility with showers, beds or hot food. So the detention here is not only illegal, but immoral.”
The Immigration Coalition said these incidents are increasing and advised people at the upcoming hearings.
“I think it's crucial that anyone who needs to go to an immigration court hearing calls New Americans in New York and their hotlines,” said Murad Wawawdeh, president and CEO of the New York Immigration Alliance.
It is also important to make sure you develop a family preparation plan and work with your attorney to establish a virtual hearing where possible.
Meanwhile, community members want to hear their demands for GO release.
