Messi, Antonela

Football star Lionel Messi and his wife Antonela Roccuzzo attended a Miami Coldplay concert, which included a special tribute from Chris Martin.

FORT Lauderdale, Fla. – Lionel Messi was replaced by Miami's game in the 2025 League Cup Championship after suffering a right leg injury in the first 10 minutes of Saturday, August 2 against Liga MX Side Necaxa.

Messi passed two defenders in the 6th minute of the game and dropped to the penalty area, fell to the court and slapped the ground immediately after rolling over.

Messi stood up and returned to the front of Miami bench himself, where he was obviously frustrated by the injury. He patted the back of his legs and then fell onto the court before continuing on the game.

Messi was replaced in the 11th minute and was replaced by midfielder Federico Redondo in Miami's lineup. He had two assists to lead Miami to a victory in the first League Cup game, but the club needed goals to improve the MLS in the standings.

The top four MLS and Liga MX teams will advance to the knockout stage, but everyone's eyes are focused on Messi's teammates, providing Miami with the scoring burden of Inter Miami to qualify for the next round.

“There are two more games and two more games, and a lot of things can happen,” Miami coach Javier Mascherano said the day before the club’s game.

Coach Necaxa meets Messi, Miami International

Necaxa beat Atlanta United 3-1 in the league cup opening game on July 30, led by new coach Fernando Gago.

Gago played side by side with Messi and Mascherano in the 2008 Olympic men's football final and lost to Germany in the 2014 FIFA FIFA Club World Cup final.

“It's always special to face the people you know, people who share a lot of good times with you,” Mascherano said of Gago. “Finally, when the ball starts to roll, I'm going to do everything possible to compete in the best way possible and win so that we still want to qualify.”
