Even if you receive a tax extension, you still need to file your 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025 to claim a third stimulus check. Missed deadlines have no extension or appeals, and any unclaimed stimulus payments have also been restored to the U.S. Treasury Department.
Is there a fourth stimulus test?

The process of viewing your tax refund status is easy.
Taxpayers submitting their returns can use “Where is my refund?” to view the refund status. Tools on the IRS.GOV website. To check the status, you must enter the following information:
- Your Social Security or Personal Taxpayer ID number (ITIN)
- Your application status
- The exact amount of your return
After entering the information, you will see one of the following:
- Returns received – The IRS received your return and is processing it.
- Refund approval – The IRS has approved your refund and is ready to be published on the displayed date.
- Refund send – The IRS has sent a refund to your bank or mailed it to you. It can take five days to display in your bank account or checks for a few weeks to arrive in mail
How long does it take for my refund?
The refund schedule depends on how you file your tax return.
If you file electronically, your declaration form will be processed much faster than submitting a paper return and waiting for a check. According to the IRS, most refunds are issued in less than three weeks.

Why is my refund delayed?
There are several reasons why tax returns may be delayed. According to the IRS, this is the most common reason:
- The return is wrong, incomplete or affected by identity theft or fraud.

- The return has filed a claim for an income tax credit or additional child tax credit, or includes Form 8379, the injured spouse allocated PDF.
- The time when the taxpayer bank or credit union publishes the refund to the taxpayer’s account.
Can I still submit taxes before the expiration date?
Yes, you can submit to the deadline. Here's what you need to know:
- Even if you miss the April 15, 2025 deadline, you can be late.
- If you request an extension, October 15, 2025 is the final date for filing a federal income tax return.
- If you have not submitted or requested an extension, it is best to submit as soon as possible to minimize fines and interest.
