TOROTO – New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Anthony Volpe made “too much” hit percentage this season in shortstop, his 12th turnover of the season in a 4-1 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. He is now tied for the American League.

Volpe won Al Gold Glove as a rookie shortstop in 2023 when he made 17 mistakes in 1,346 innings. Last year, he encountered 16 mistakes in 1,416 innings.

Walp played 846 defensive games this season. He matched Kansas City's Jonathan India with an AL lead and made a wrong shooting percentage, which led to a fifth inning in four rounds in Toronto.

“I hurriedly pulled the throw and gave Goldy a tough choice,” Walp said of first baseman Paul Goldschmidt.

It was a game after third baseman Oswald Peraza also made a throwing error, which made the score.

Boone admitted that Volpe's total error count was high, but insisted that he wasn't worried about the overall defensive performance of the shortstop.

“He's still doing a lot of binge games, he's still doing a lot of games,” Boone said. “He's just not the same as before two years. That's three or four games we're talking about.”

After the game, Volpe had an ice pack on his left shoulder, but both he and Boone insisted that there were no health problems.

Yankees left-handed Carlos Rodón said he had not lost confidence in Volpe.

“Hang with him,” Roden said. “He would be better.”

San Francisco Giants shortstop Willy Adames made a major league-high 13 mistakes in Monday's game. Elly de la Cruz of Cincinnati and Manny Machado of San Diego also encountered 12 errors.

The Yankees have lost their last five meetings this season, with 2-6 against Toronto. New York faces Eastern opponents 10-17.

Meanwhile, Toronto expanded its home winning streak to a combined record of 11 games.

“It's been a month now and we haven't been the best yet,” Boone said. “Obviously, we need to start playing better and putting the wins into the victory column. That's what we really need.”
