Harlem, New York (WABC) – A customs and border protection officer was shot dead in the face after a noticeable robbery in Fort Washington Park on Saturday.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced at a press conference Monday morning that the second suspect was detained in connection with the incident on George Washington Bridge.
Officials have previously announced the arrest of 21-year-old Miguel Mora, who they say is illegal and has a history of violence in recent months.
Nom said Mora was illegally in the United States despite being deported back to the Dominican Republic two years ago.
Mayor Eric Adams said the suspect was exactly the type of individual the city was working with the federal government to try to capture.
“In New York City, the 21-year-old man was arrested in advance for the assault and violated a protection order. He had an active bench warrant in the Bronx at the time of the shooting. He was asked to rob the robbery last December and was stabbed since January. The robbery last December and the robbery in January and stabbed in January.” “The violent immigrants and asylum seekers who brought violence, really destroyed the reputation of those who came to this country to pursue the American dream.”
However, Norm criticized Adams on Monday.
“How many more lives are needed before we have public safety, the number one priority among our largest cities,” Neum said. “When I looked at what Mayor Adams did to New York City, seeing families suffering from their policies hurt my heart.”
Video of the incident released by the Department of Homeland Security shows two men approaching the 42-year-old officer on a motorcycle and a female companion took out a gun.
The officer pulled out his service weapon, but the gunman shot him in the face and arm. The officer fired backwards and hit the gunman's leg.
Officials said Mora was admitted to the Bronx Hospital after the shooting, and he had a gunshot wound in the leg and groin area.
“Our officers are heroes. In this case, he is exactly what we ask of all officers.”
