The extensive takeover room of the San Francisco 49ers was injured, leaving the team eagerly awaiting the return of one top organizer, Brandon Aiyuk. While the veteran square is not expected to be ready for week 1, the 49ers will be able to pay back as early as Week 6, depending on his continued improvement in recovery.

General Manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR on Thursday morning and shared the latest news about Aiyuk's identity.

“Brendon did a really good job,” Lynch said. “I've talked about the whole process, a lot of things happened to him during his injury. … I think a lot of people remember it's hit, it's vicious. You can see, for example, 'Oh no, we might have trouble.' Sure enough, we are.”

Aiyuk's injury occurred in October 2024 in a regular season showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers receiver suffered tears from ACL and MCL and caused additional damage, ending his season prematurely. The team hopes he can return in 2025 and provides a significant boost to a broad receiver group that went through an offseason transition after the offseason Deebo Samuel trade.

“He recovered well,” Lynch added. “I think we're comfortable saying he won't be playing in Week 1 and then, there might be a while after that.”

Aiyuk is expected to start the season from the physical performance (PUP) roster, excluding him from the first four games. In just one week, Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco's Week 5 showdown with the Los Angeles Rams seemed to be the earliest reality return date.

However, the 49ers can wait until Week 7 against the Atlanta Falcons, as that game will be in Levi’s stadium.

“I won't make a exact schedule, but hopefully at some point this season he's playing the type of football we know, and when he's there he should want to be himself and expect to play. That's going to be big for our team.”
