Latest news from Jet Camp

Wednesday, July 23

First-year coach Aaron Glenn was so excited about his first training camp practice Wednesday that he woke up at 3:30 a.m. and couldn't fall asleep. His wife texted at 2:30 a.m. and offered a simple suggestion: “Just AG.”

So the new coaching era for the Jets began.

Glenn did everything right in his first practice, from units to units bounces – his desire to be the coach of the entire team, not just one side of the ball.

After that, he might score on the suffering fan base, telling reporters: “Listen, I know the pain, I know everything the fans are going through. … I understand the pain, I hope, I pray. I hope to make sure the pain goes away, I think about it every day.”

Glenn was the first-round draft pick for the 1994 Jets and played with them until 2001. He knows the plight of history (not great) and fans. He could speak their language, but eventually he would have to win. This is the honeymoon period. Enjoy it as much as you can.

More:

  • QB Justin Fields (8-5) performed well in his first exercise. His best throw is the wide corner road to his old Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson. The rest of his completion was checkout for the backrest.

  • It wasn't a good start for WR Malachi Corley, who dropped the pass from the fourth-string QB Brady Cook. During a disappointing rookie year, Coley needs a strong camp to secure the roster. He won't get it for free this year.

  • Incumbent Coe Tippmann admitted that “it surprised me” when he signed veteran C Josh Myers in the offseason. Tippman said Glenn called him immediately to explain the team's thinking process. Glenn described it as a “open match.” Early Edge: Tippman.

By jet standards, it was a quiet reporting day. There is no Aaron Rogers Circus, no contract holding, no interference. This undoubtedly pleases new coach Aaron Glenn, whose preference is “silence.”

On Day 1, the Jets celebrated young stars Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson, who both received a major contract extension last week. In fact, Gardner formally signed his four-year, $120.4 million extension shortly after the report. It was the first time that both players have seen the media since the deal was completed.

The Jets also exaggerated their new state-of-the-art locker room, which includes a large number of high-tech bells and whistles. “Super Paint,” defensive tackle Quinnen Williams called it.

New digs, new coaches, new quarterbacks, new everything. Detect trends?

Now all they have to do is…you know, win the game.

The Jets lasted nine playoffs for nine consecutive seasons, for 14 consecutive years. Williams, who arrived on the scene in 2019, said that keeping failures was “absolutely challenging” but he was optimistic that things would change.

“I think it's very high expectations for this team, this coaching staff, this organization and what we want to achieve and where we want to go,” Williams said.

More:

  • Glenn has a lot of early praise. Wilson hints that Glenn serves as assistant coach and guard for the Detroit Lions – Wilson said the first year coach “looked at the blueprint” of how to flip the Moribund franchise.

  • The first practice will be 8:30 am earlier in the day, not the past few years.

  • Gardner loves the new defensive program, which has a more humane coverage than in recent years. He is expected to be able to travel with his opponent's first WR.
